2 Kings 13:1-9

2 Kings 13:1 is part of this passage.
1In the twenty-third year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria for seventeen years. 2He did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin. He didn’t depart from it. 3The LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael, continually. 4Jehoahaz begged the LORD, and the LORD listened to him; for he saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Syria oppressed them. 5(The LORD gave Israel a savior, so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians; and the children of Israel lived in their tents as before. 6Nevertheless they didn’t depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, with which he made Israel to sin, but walked in them; and the Asherah also remained in Samaria.) 7For he didn’t leave to Jehoahaz of the people any more than fifty horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Syria destroyed them and made them like the dust in threshing. 8Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 9Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria; and Joash his son reigned in his place.

Interpretation

In 2 Kings 13:1-9, In the twenty-third year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria for seventeen years The narrator wants us to see the covenant God who empowers prophets, weighs kings, and will not share glory with Baal. Listen to the text: “In the twenty-third year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria for seventeen years. He did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, and followed…”

On his deathbed Elisha still directs victory; later his bones raise a corpse. Yahweh’s power is not trapped inside a living celebrity prophet.

Jehoahaz and Joash of Israel suffer Aram; Elisha’s deathbed prophecy and bones raise a man; Yahweh still has compassion on Israel. In Judah’s preservation (chs. 11–13), Joash is rescued and Elisha’s final acts still give hope. This passage belongs in that movement: 2 Kings 13:1-9 is not an isolated scrap but a step in God’s purpose to claim Israel’s and Judah’s thrones and worship. Opened eyes, found books, and Passover reform show that true security is Yahweh’s presence and Word, not chariots or alliances.

A pastoral word for today: Honor finishing servants; trust God’s power beyond their graves.

Notice 2 Kings’ pastoral urgency. God forms a people who can trust prophetic word, open their eyes in fear, and return to the book of the law. The book trains hurried readers to exclusive loyalty and repentant hope. Let 2 Kings 13:1-9 steady your pace enough to listen without hardening.

As you sit with 2 Kings 13:1-9, ask what it shows about the God who raises prophets, opens eyes, finds lost books, and judges idolatry. 2 Kings is living Scripture that forms trust and repentance—not a mere royal chronicle. Let the text steady your confidence in Yahweh’s true kingship.
